Term: Histamine

Substance found in many cells, especially mast cells, basophils, and platelets, that is released when the cells are injured; results in vasodilation, increased permeability of blood vessels, and constriction of bronchioles. (1) Histamine also causes contraction of smooth muscle, and stimulation of gastric acid secretion, and is released during allergic reactions. (4)
