Term: Enteric Nervous System

A portion of the autonomic nervous system within the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and gallbladder. Its sensory neurons monitor tension in the intestinal wall and assess the composition of intestinal contents; its motor neurons exert control over the motility and secretions of the gastrointestinal tract. (1)
