Term: Mitochondrial Function/Dysfunction

Mitochondria are described as “the powerhouse of the cell” as they generate the most of the cell’s supply of chemical energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Mitochondria are also involved in cellular signaling, cellular differentiating, and the cell life cycle.  Mitochondrial dysfunction or disease is highly correlated/ co-morbid with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.
