An electrically insulating phospholipid layer that surrounds the axons of many neurons. Alongunmyelinated fibers, impulse move continuously as waves, but in myelinated fibers they take larger jumps along the nerve fiber and are thus able to get to the end quicker. Myelin helps prevent the electrical current from leaving the axon. (4)
